I say, “P.S.” because Motovun was a bit of a side note to our trip to Rovinj, Croatia. We flew into Trieste, Italy and drove to Croatia via Slovenia. On our way out, we decided to stop in Motovun and indulge in some truffles. Eating and buying anything truffle is practically obligatory in Istria. Motovun in particular.
There’s a handful of restaurants on the top of this little mountain town. I’m actually pretty sure there are more shops dedicated to truffles than restaurants.
It’s very common in Croatia for wineries to sell wine in bulk. People bring their own jug and fill it up there. Right as we pasted this cute spot, I saw a smiley old couple leaving with their full jug. I love watching interactions between locals and catching a glimpse a bit of their daily life.
Personally, I wouldn’t stay the night here because it’s a little too small. However, it is worth checking out if you are in the area and have a hankering for some truffles.

Looking into a honeymoon trip to either Slovinia, Croatia, or Hungary (possibly all three!) I love the idea of flying in, renting a car, and driving through each. Do you have any suggestions on how to combine 2 of the 3 or all 3 within 14 days? And, what time of year would you suggest for this road trip? Loving your blog!!! 🙂
Hi Taura,
It all depends on where you want to go in each of these countries, but I think it’s doable in 14 days. Budapest might be a little hard to fit in if you want to do all the way down to Dubrovnik. It also depends on what kind of traveler you are…. do you like a jam packed itinerary? Or slow travel? Any time of year would be nice except winter (I’m not a big fan of driving in snow in an unfamiliar place). Have you checked out my road trip in Slovenia post? You could do that but then keep going south to Rovinj, the lakes, Split and then Dubrovnik. You should consider going Montenegro as well. Be sure to check with your car rental that they allow border crossing. They usually do for those countries, but double check.
Enjoy and good luck!
I looooved visiting Croatia! The wineries were the best. I’d love to go back and explore the little towns!
Yes!! I love their white wine Malvazija! Cheers!
True story!!! Croatia is one of my (many) favorites. 🙂
Aww it looks so lovely there! Then again, anywhere in Croatia looks pretty amazing hah!
