Provence is filled with beautiful luxury properties, boutique hotels and charming chateaus that will make your trip memorable. When deciding where to stay in Provence, it can be hard to narrow it down with so many options. My top picks are divided by what type of hotel and location (village stay, hotels in Aix-en-Provence, luxury properties, guesthouses, countryside hotels and an amazing budget find).
While the region of Provence spans all the way to the Mediterranean Sea and includes the French Riviera, this guide will focus on its inland properties. Think chateaus with terracotta tiles nestled near a lavender fields, drinking rose overlooking a vineyard and getting lost (in a good way) riding bikes along one-lane dirt paths.
These recommendations are based on where I have personally visited, knowledge of the area and a few properties that have been on travel wishlist for years.

Where to Stay in a Village in Provence
Le Moulin – At first I thought it was a bit interesting that the Beaumier hotel group would have two hotels in the village of Lourmarin, but after visiting both I can see why now. Le Moulin is a boutique stay with more of a traditional hotel experience, full bar and restaurant. This property was lively with a buzz humming around, while the neighboring Le Galinier was more secluded and quiet.
I love the touch of ochre throughout the beautiful interior spaces. Complete with a small outdoor pool and cute restaurant terrace facing the main walking path in Lourmarin. We had a wonderful dinner one night at the restaurant Bacheto. I won’t soon forget the cheese plate with items sourced from their shop around the corner. Check pricing and availability.
B&Bs and Guesthouse
Le Galinier – The sister Beaumier property in Lourmarin is considered a “guesthouse” and has limited reception hours. It’s a quiet setting with nice gardens and a spacious pool area. I loved the freestanding tub in the superior room. It’s right on the outskirts of town, so it offers that private chateau feel, but an easy walk to shops and restaurants. Check pricing and availability.
Chateau de Varenne – This idyllic chateau with 12 rooms dates back to the 17th century. The boutique guesthouse is owned by a family with 3 young children, so I wouldn’t hesitate to book here as a traveling family. Just a short drive from Avignon and the perfect location for day trips around Provence. Check pricing and availability.
Domaine Les Martins – Just a few minutes from Gordes, this lovely guesthouse is located in a hamlet that dates back to the 17th century. Between outdoor terraces and small kitchenettes, the charming rooms have ample space in a relaxed countryside setting. Not suitable for children. Check pricing and availability.
Hotels in Aix-en-Provence
Hôtel Le Pigonnet – This is a lovely hotel located 10-15 minute by foot to the center of Aix-en-Provence. It’s currently under renovation though and I really hesitated when booking here. Almost all of the shared interior spaces, indoor dining areas and the spa were unavailable.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, and actually it was better than most of the rooms pictured online (a welcomed surprise that almost never happens). We really enjoyed the gardens and our stay overall, but the construction was a nuisance. Check pricing and availability.
Villa Gallici Hotel & Spa – This former residence dating back to the 18th century offers 23 thoughtfully decorated rooms and suites. The Villa Gallici is a Relais & Châteaux property complete with a luxurious heated pool, gardens and fine dining. This would be an ideal choice for a couples getaway. Check pricing and availability.
5-Star Luxury Hotels
Airelles Gordes – Airelles hotels are synonymous with luxury. They have a hotel on the ground of Versailles after all. The Gordes property is perched on the cliffside with views of the Luberon valley from the iconic pool, manicured garden and select suites. This would be an incredible property for a special occasion or celebratory trip. Check prices and availability.
Hôtel Crillon le Brave – Comprised of 17th and 18th century neighboring houses, Hôtel Crillon le Brave perfectly marries traditional Provencal interiors with modern touches. The picturesque pool and outdoor restaurant are the perfect places to relax and enjoy the views. Check prices and availability.
Countryside Hotels
Domaine de Fontenille – This property is much bigger than I expected with several buildings, a restaurant, a pool, lounge spaces and expansive gardens. It’s still very private though with 19 rooms and suites. We sat around the beautiful fountain with a glass of wine while my son watched the fish. It was wonderful. Check pricing and availability.
Domaine de Manville – I’ve stayed at other Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties in France (check out where to stay in Normandy), and I’m always impressed. A short 5 minute drive from Les Baux-de-Provence, you’d be close to a village while still having the amenities of a 5-star hotel. Check pricing and availability.
Baumanière is also a great choice nearby that mixes rustic and modern style.
La Bastide de Moustiers – Owned by a French chef (you can bet the food is going to be delicious) who has been sharing this magical property with travelers since the 90s. Spend the day at the nearby town of Moustiers-Sainte-Marieon or on a paddle boat on Verdon Gorge (10 minute drive). Check pricing and availability.
Chateau Saint Roux – An expected rainy forecast in our French Riviera itinerary had us leaving the beach and heading to Chateau Saint Roux. I booked a junior suite a few hours before we arrived, but was disappointed to find the suite did not have a separate living area like in the photos. However, I still think it’s a special place to stay with beautiful rooms and a nice restaurant.
The mini farm was a hit with my son. We must have toured the farm 5 or 6 times and he’s still talking about the goats weeks later. The hotel is right next to a helicopter airport, which my son also loved but I could see where other clientele might not find this as entertaining. Located about 1 hour from Saint Tropez, Aix-en-Provence and the Verdon Gorge, this also makes a nice base to visit 3 different kinds of places in Provence. Check pricing and availability.
La Bastide de Marie – Just a few minutes drive from the small village of Ménerbes, you’ll find the restored 18th century farmhouse La Bastide de Marie with antique furniture and a renowned restaurant. When you’re not relaxing among the olive trees or taking a dip in one of the two pools, you can visit one the many villages in the Luberon.
Breakfast is included, but I’d upgrade to the half-board option for a memorable dinner paired with their wine produced on site. Spacious family suites available. Even if you’re not a hotel guest, you can visit the winery or book a table for dinner. Check pricing and availability.
Excellent Value
Hotel Moulin d’Aure – Conveniently located between Saint Rémy and Avignon, this charming hotel is an excellent value with rooms starting under $100 a night. Check pricing and availability.
